Persipura All Star: Pangdam Cup Becomes an Event for Searching for Seeds of Football in Papua – Persipura All Star (PAS) proposes to hold the Pangdam Cup again. This was expressed by PAS Chief Metu Duaramuri through PAS Secretary, Yohanes Zonggonau before the Cenderawasih XVII Regional Military Commander, Major General Muhammad Saleh Mustafa, after playing football with journalists at the Mandala Jayapura Stadium, Friday 25 November 2022.

He also asked the Cenderawasih Regional Military Commander to have an audience with PAS to discuss the prestigious Pangdam Cup tournament.

“We have prepared the committee, including match equipment,” said Zonggonau.

The former Persipura Jayapura player said that the Pangdam Cup has been running since the 1980s. The Pangdam Cup was attended by all districts in the province of Irian Jaya (at that time the name for Papua).

“The Pangdam Cup is also a talent show event for future players in the Land of Papua. In the past, there was no PSSI League III. So the Pangdam Cup can be aligned with League III,” said the former Persija Jakarta striker.

It was said that teams such as Persipura Jayapura, Perseman Manokwari, PSBS Biak and others were participating teams in the Pangdam Cup. “One of the teams that won the Pangdam XVII/Cenderawasih Cup was Perseman Manokwari which gave birth to the best players, like Adolf Kabo, Yonas Sawor, Ely Rumaropen and others. They finally joined the PSSI Main Division around the 1980s,” he explained.

Unfortunately, the Pangdam Cup was ceased for at least two decades, due to various obstacles.

Pangdam Cenderawasih, Maj. Gen. TNI Muhammad Saleh Mustafa explained that the Pangdam Cup would be held again in the near future. PAS will act as the Organizing Committee (Panpel) of the upcoming Pangdam Cup.

“I welcome PAS’ plan to hold this tournament. Gentlemen, all of you at PAS, thank you for conveying this. We will realize it in the near future. I’ll wait for the committee later,” the Pangdam said.
