New Province in Papua Based on Traditional Territory, Academics: Services Must Be Based on Local Wisdom

goodmorningpapua.com – Three new provinces in Papua have been inaugurated. A Minister of Home Affairs, Tito Karnavian, has inaugurated the Acting (Pj) Governors in the three new provinces. The newly inaugurated provinces are South Papua Province, Central Papua Province, and Papua Mountains Province.

Tito appointed Apolo Safanpo as Acting Governor of South Papua, Ribka Haluk as Acting Governor of Central Papua, and Nicolaus Kandomo as Acting Governor of Highlands Papua. A lecturer of Government Science from Cenderawasih University Muliadi Anangkota said the three new provinces were formed based on customary territories in Papua. “Because it is based on customary territory, the service must also follow the culture of the local area, “he said when contacted by cellphone, Friday (11/11/2022) night. Development based on customary areas, said Muliadi, had indeed been carried out so far, but was still controlled by the local government, provincial government.

“With these three new provinces, development based on culture or local wisdom by looking at the potential in each region will be more obvious, more detailed, more focused and more real,” he said.

Not only that, Muliadi said, the three Acting Governors who were inaugurated were representatives of indigenous Papuan children who could represent the three new provinces. “We have to be honest, the people who were appointed (the Acting Governor) in my opinion represent elements of the customary territory. So there is a positive regional spirit and euphoria,” he said.
