Maintaining Papuan Cultural Identity Through Traditional Game Sports – Indonesia comprises of an array of islands – no wonder it has so many cultures. One of the largest islands in Indonesia is Papua. From the broadness of Papua, it is not surprising that many cultures were born there. One of the cultural products is traditional games. In this millennial era, traditional games are starting to be extinct, eroded by the proliferation of technology.

Book of 100 Traditional Papuan Games: Maintaining Identity. Building Love for Peace is written with the hope of maintaining identity and building love of peace in the land of Papua.

This book contains a hundred games from Papua that we can know, ranging from the name of the game, how to play, the rules, to the benefits obtained from these games. This book is divided into three chapters, namely about traditional sports, traditional Papuan sports, and closing.

In the first chapter, it was explained that exercise is closely related to health, outdoor physical activity, and last but not least, sport can function as a cultural practice and identity.

Traditional games are sports developed from a regional game that is original or is a tradition from a particular area.

Traditional sports are part of the cultural heritage of our ancestors. Traditional sports and games are also efficient means of transmitting the values of solidarity, diversity, mutual cooperation, and culture whose ultimate goal is peace and development.

Furthermore, in the second part of this book, we begin to enter the points of traditional Papuan games. In this second part, contains 100 traditional games. Each game consists of information about the name of the game, the tools of the game, the number of children playing, the strategy for instilling the value of peace-loving, the values in the game, how to play, the time of the game, and the determination of the winner.

One of the traditional Papuan games that was raised was the Waik Game. It is explained in the waik game, what tools are used to play, how many people are in one game, and so on. Next is the last part, which is the third part of the closing which contains the bibliography and about the author.

This book has definitely its strengths and weaknesses. Starting from the weakness of this book, there are points of discussion that are considered ineffective. This point is a discussion of the Love of Peace Values Planting Strategy which is contained in every discussion of traditional games. It feels less effective because the content of the points is always the same in every game and only changes the name of the game.

Should that be the case, the author should be able to include it at the beginning of the chapter only. It will be more effective and save more book pages. Apart from its shortcomings, this book also has advantages such as the information conveyed is very clear and detailed, so that the reader will understand the message the author wants to convey much faster.

Furthermore, one of the advantages of this book is the presence of pictures in each game. This makes it easier for readers to understand these traditional games.
