goodmorningpapua.com – The Ministry of Transportation is setting up the Depapre Port in Jayapura Regency, Papua, as a hub for the eastern part of Indonesia. The Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi assessed that the Papua region has a lot of potential and will provide benefits if used.
Even so, he assessed, a number of preparations must be made to optimize the performance of port activities at the Depapre Port serving container activities and pioneering passenger ships.
“We hope that all stakeholders from Ministries/Institutions, Regional Governments, and other related elements, will jointly play an active role and collaborate in efforts to improve the performance of the Depapre Port,” he said in the FGD “Review of the Acceleration Strategy for Depapre Port Development and Depapre Sentani Road Infrastructure. Towards Community Economic Awakening” which took place online, Tuesday (11/1/2022).
Since early 2021, this port has served a new sea toll route connecting the Papua and West Papua regions. The Minister of Transportation explained that currently efforts need to be made to increase the return charge from east to west.
“Papua has a lot of potential for commodities ranging from fish, seaweed, wood, and so on. If this is attempted, it will provide economic benefits for the Papuan people and can also optimize the performance of marine toll vessels because there are no empty cargoes,” said Minister of Transportation Budi.
He revealed that Jayapura Regency as a development center in Papua is currently in the national and world concerns. This is marked by the bulding of a number of infrastructures. These include the magnificent and international standard Lukas Enembe Stadium, as well as Sentani Airport in Jayapura which has been developed into an international airport.
“In the future, Depapre Port to become the main port which is expected to stimulate the economy in Jayapura Regency and its surroundings,” he said.
