goodmorningpapua.com – Three new provinces will be established in Indonesia. These three provinces are divisions of the Papua Province. With this addition, there will be 37 provinces in the country.
The plan to form a province in the eastern tip of Indonesia is regulated in the Draft Law (RUU) concerning the Province of South Papua, Central Papua Province, and the Province of Papua Central Mountains. The bill was approved by the Legislative Body (Baleg) of the Indonesian House in a plenary meeting held on Wednesday (6/4/2022). In the plenary meeting, all factions in Baleg agreed to the bill on the three provinces.
“After we listened to the opinions of all factions and agreed. Can the results of the harmonization of the Bill on the Provinces of South Papua, Central Papua and Papua Central Mountains be approved?” asked Deputy Chairman of the Legislative Council of the DPR Achmad Baidowi in a meeting. “Agreed,” answered the trial participants.
1. South Papua Province (Ha Anim)
It is with capital city Merauke. South Papua Province will later cover the following areas:
- Merauke Regency
Consisting of 30 districts, Merauke is the largest district as well as Indonesia’s leading area which is directly adjacent to Papua New Guinea. With an area of 45,071 cubic kilometers (11 percent of the total area of Papua Province), the Merauke region consists of lowlands and swamps.
- Mappi Regency
Mappi Regency has a total area of 23,824 cubic kilometers consisting of 15 districts. With the potential for marine resources and large mangrove forests, this region favors the agriculture and fisheries sectors. Asmat Regency is located in the southern part of Papua Province,
- Asmat Regency
It has an area of 23,746 cubic kilometers or 7.44 percent of the total area of Papua Province. Most of the Asmat Regency is a forest area, so forestry is one of the most strategic commodities.
- Boven Digoel Regency
Area of Boven Digoel Regency is 27,108.29 cubic kilometers. This regency has 20 districts. The geographical condition of Boven Digoel Regency which consists of many small rivers and several large rivers makes its citizens engage in the fishing sector. In addition, the agricultural, plantation, animal husbandry, forestry, and tourism sectors are also potential areas for this area.
2. Central Papua Province (Meepago)
Central Papua Province or Meepago will later have a capital city of Timika which is located in Mimika Regency. The details of the area are:
- Mimika Regency
Mimika Regency has an area of 21,693.51 cubic kilometers or 4.75 percent of the total area of Papua Province. This regency has 18 districts. With the potential for enormous mineral and mining wealth, Mimika is the richest district in Papua Province.
- Paniai Regency
With an area of 8,045.25 cubic kilometers, Paniai Regency is divided into 10 districts. Forestry is one of the sub-sectors that contributes significantly to Paniai Regency’s income.
- Dogiyai Regency
It has an area of 4,237.4 cubic kilometers which is divided into 7 districts. As much as 85 percent of the Dogiyai area is still dominated by hills and mountains. The agricultural sector in this region is dominated by rice and secondary crops. Meanwhile, livestock commodities are dominated by cattle, goats and pigs.
- Deyiai Regency
With an area of 41,231.6 cubic kilometers, Deiyai Regency has 5 districts. Deiyai Regency is mostly dominated by forest areas, both protected forests and production forests. Therefore, the forestry sector has become one of the best in the region.
- Intan Jaya Regency
Intan Jaya has an area of 3,922 cubic kilometers which is divided into 6 districts. This district has a huge gold mining potential. A number of mining companies are established in this area, such as PT Freeport to PT Wabu.
- Puncak Regency
With an area of 8,055 cubic kilometers, Puncak Regency consists of 8 districts. This district has various economic potentials, including agriculture with the largest production of cassava. In addition, the livestock sector is dominated by goats, cows and pigs.
3. Papua Province of Central Mountains (Lapago)
With the capital city of Wamena located in Jayawijaya Regency, Papua Province of the Central Mountains consists of:
- Puncak Jaya District
Puncak Jaya Regency has an area of 14,532 cubic kilometers or about 3.42 percent of the total area of Papua Province. Puncak Jaya is divided into 26 districts. In this region, the forestry sector is the pre-eminent. Followed by the use of rice fields, dry land, industrial land, mining land, to fish ponds.
- Jayawijaya Regency

- Lanny Jaya Regency

- Mamberamo Regency

- Nduga Regency
Nduga Regency has an area of 12,941 cubic kilometers or 4.08 percent of the total area of Papua Province. Consisting of 8 districts, Nduga has the potential for forestry commodities, livestock dominated by pigs, fisheries, and plantations dominated by coffee, red fruit, coconut, sugar cane, and sago.
- Tolikara District
Total area of Tolikara Regency is 14,263 kilometers which is divided into 46 districts. Dominated by highlands with an altitude of more than 1,000 meters above sea level, the agricultural sector is the main economic activity in this region, including rice and tubers.
- Yahukimo Regency
Yahukimo Regency has an area of 17,152 kilometers with 51 districts. A number of superior commodities in this region are coffee plantations, red fruit, and sago. Then, the forestry sector and pig, cow, and goat farming.
- Yalimo Regency
Yalimo has an area of 3,568.52 kilometers or 1.1 percent of the total area of Papua Province. This regency consists of 5 districts. The potential land used in this area is corn, cassava, coffee, and coconut. Other sectors that are also leading commodities are forestry, animal husbandry, and fisheries.
