Church Communion for the Acceleration of Papuan Development – The Secretariat of the Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia held a Coordination Meeting with the Communion of Churches in Papua (PGGP) and related Ministries/Institutions to discuss the Acceleration of Welfare Development in Papua.

The meeting, which was held in the Jayapura City State Finance Building Hall, involved a number of officials from ministries/technical institutions and church institutions in the Land of Papua who are members of the PGGP (Communion of Churches in Papua) Papua and West Papua, elements of the Papua and West Papua Regional Governments and 5 local church level.

This Coordination Meeting was held in order to follow up the direction of the Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia, K.H. Ma’ruf Amin, to involve Papuan churches in an effort to accelerate the acceleration of development in Papua and West Papua, which he conveyed directly when receiving an audience from PGGP/PB on April 20, 2022 in Jakarta.

At that moment, PGGP/PB submitted a Recommendation containing input points from Papuan Church leaders as consideration for the Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia in developing the Land of Papua. Now, the visit of the Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia Secretariat and technical ministries to Papua is carried out to discuss technically the realization of the partnership program with the Church as well as to show the seriousness of the central government to synchronize the programs that have been running with the aspirations of the churches in Papua.

This Coordination Meeting was chaired by Prof. Dr. Masykuri Abdillah (a Special Staff for the Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia) and opened with the direction of Dr. Ir. Suprayoga Hadi, M.S.P (a Deputy for Human Development Policy Support and Equity Development, Setwapres RI). This coordination meeting also invited Pdt. Hiskia Rollo (General Chair of PGGP Prov. Papua) along with the ranks of PGGP Papua and West Papua, Chairs of the Aras Church Institute and Chair of the Papuan DPR Jhony Banua Rouw who has also been appointed by PGGP to serve as General Chair of the PCC.

The holding of the Coordination Meeting in Papua was a part of the central government’s move to promote a cultural-religious and humanist approach in handling Papuan issues, especially with church leaders as one of the main stakeholders in Papua’s development history.

Specifically, Dr. Ir. Suprayoga Hadi, M.S.P said that this coordination meeting was intended to synchronize the aspirations of PGGP/PB with the Presidential Action Plan 9/2022 on the program for the Acceleration of Welfare Development in Papua 2021-2022 FY 2022 and to absorb PGGP/PB aspirations as material for the preparation of RKP TA 2023, RKPD 2023 and RAPPP 2023-2024 and RIPPP 2021-2041.

Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Masykuri Abdillah said that the involvement of Papuan Church institutions in the process of accelerating development in Papua was an aspiration from Papuan Church leaders who conveyed directly to the Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia in an audience on April 20, 2022 ago.

“The recommendations submitted by PGGP/PB are generally in line with the direction of the central government’s program as referred to in the Presidential Instruction Plan 9/2022. In the future, this partnership is expected to continue with the presence of a Representative Office from the Setwapres RI along with several ministries and institutions in Jayapura”, he said.

While Pdt. Hiskia Rollo conveyed that his party greatly appreciated the visit of the Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia and his colleagues from ministries/institutions at the central level to meet with PGGP/PB.

“The work of the church is not only conducted at the high level, but also to builds people at the grassroots level. Throughout Papua, the church is the first to open pathways, build schools, the people’s economy and health, then the government enters. Therefore, Mr. Vice President as a Kyai, it is necessary to involve priests who are also “kyai in Papua” to speed up the acceleration of development in Papua,” he said.

He explained that dozens of Synods in Papua and West Papua had agreed and then submitted the aspirations of the people to the Vice President KH. Ma’ruf Amin who is also the coordinator for the Acceleration of Development in Papua and West Papua.

“So, after several meetings, one of the answers is ultimately this, namely Prof. Maskury and Mr. Yoga being sent with other relevant ministries,” he explained.

“We always pray that the meetings and recommendations that we have conveyed today can be followed up in programs that bring peace to Papua,” he continued.

Meanwhile, the chairman of the Papuan DPR, as well as the chairman of the Papua Christian Center (PCC), Jhony Banua Rouw, expressed similar appreciation. The progress of the partnership is said to be very quick and significant, even though it has only been 5 months since the hearing with the Vice President was held. This is in accordance with the mandate and responsibility of the Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia as the Coordinator for the Acceleration of Development in Papua.

“In the future, the good intentions of the central government need to be communicated in a more synchronized manner with the church in Papua. There must be a common perception and there needs to be adjustments to various national standards for programs being implemented in Papua,” he said.
