The Minister of Communication and Information, Johnny G. Plate, stated that he had anticipated the potential for the increased traffic ahead of the National Sports Week (PON) XX in Papua. In his opinion, the Ministry of Communication and Informatics to prepare telecommunication network backups to support the needs of the organizing committee to athletes and officials.
“We to provide backup, for what? This PON is also very decisive that Indonesia is not hampered by Covid-19, we are still able to carry out that. Papua and PB PON must be successful in conducting this PON, because this is our collective duty,” he said during the discussion of the Merdeka Barat 9 Forum (FMB 9), Peering at the Readiness of PON XX of Papua, from the Office of the Minister of Communication and Informatics, Jakarta, Thursday (24/06/ 2021).
According to the Minister of Communication and Information, cellular telecommunications operators have expressed their commitment to ensure that their infrastructure can guarantee quality and is supported by backup services.
“We have built an underwater cable at the same depth on the new route, so that currently the telecommunication service of fiber optic data from West Indonesia to Papua, and from Papua to the Central and Western parts of Indonesia has returned to normal as before the subaqeous cable was broken. ,” he explained.
The Minister of Communication and Information welcomed the government’s decision to implement PON XX and National Paralympic Week (Perparnas) XVI in Papua. To participate in providing support for organizing the two national events, the Minister of Communication and Information sees international events as a reference for Indonesia. “What is certain is that in this Covid-19 pandemic situation, Covid itself should not be an obstacle for us, we must prove that Covid will not be able to prevent Indonesia and PB PON Papua from carrying out this sporting activity,” he added.
