A Trace of Treatment for the Wound Animals at the Sorong Nature Tourism Park (TWA)

goodmorningpapua.com – West Papua, were seen noisy receiving the arrival of residents. The residents came to TWA with a number of illegal wild animals in an injured condition, such as the King Kakak Tua, Cenderawasih, Lau Lau, various types of lizards, and others.

For TWA officers, this is not the first time this has happened. Some time before, TWA also received the arrival of a number of residents with similar cases, namely bringing the injured illegal animals. “There are birds of all kinds, mammals, and reptiles, all of which are getting sick. We call it illegal because indeed all these animals are caught by residents,” said Mutiono from the West Papua Natural Resources Conservation Center (BBKSDA).

Mutiono continued, the illegal animals then received treatment from BBKSDA officers until they fully recovered. “We check the sick animals carefully for their health and take good care of them, then adapt them to the environment, finally we release them. We receive an average of 100-150 animals in one month,” he said in a press release.

From these repeated cases, PT Refinery Pertamina Internasional (KPI) Unit Kasim took the initiative to build a quarantine clinic in the TWA area located in Sorong, West Papua. “This is proof of our concern in efforts to protect and preserve animals in this TWA area. Facilities of the clinic include quarantine rooms, recovery rooms, doctor’s rooms and transit cages,” explained Unit Manager of Communication Relations & CSR of PT KPI Kasim Unit, Dodi Yapsuka.

Dodi continued, this is in accordance with the 13th Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely taking immediate action to combat climate change and its impacts as well as the 15th goal of protecting, restoring and supporting sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, managing forests in a sustainable manner, combating desertification, and inhibiting and reversing land degradation and halting biodiversity loss.

The existence of the Sorong TWA quarantine clinic was officially opened by the Deputy Minister of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia, Alue Dohong who was accompanied by the Head of West Papua BBKSDA, Basar Manullang on September 25, 2021.

“This activity is a part of the Annual Program Implementation Plan of the Cooperation Agreement with the West Papua Province BBKSDA which was initiated since 2018. Hopefully this collaboration can have a positive impact on natural resources, especially in West Papua Province,” said Dodi.

Budi Mulyanto said that his party was consistent in collaborating on natural resource conservation with PT KPI Unit Kasim. “This collaboration has been in the form of flora and fauna conservation since 2018. This year we added it in the form of supporting infrastructure for the conservation of biological resources in the Sorong Nature Tourism Park,” he said.

Positive appreciation was also conveyed by the Deputy Minister of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia, Alue Dohong, who regarded that the PT KPI Unit Kasim and West Papua BBKSDA programs were quite strategic in the midst of endangered animal conditions. Alue also hopes that TWA Sorong can become an area of nature education for students, especially in Sorong district.
