92% Papuans are For Indonesia

goodmorningpapua.com – The Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs (Menko Polhukam) Mahfud MD stated that the most of Papuans are for Indonesia. The government also emphasizes that Papua and West Papua are parts of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI).

“Based on the survey, 92 percent of Papuan citizens are for Republic of Indonesia,” said Mahfud MD in a press conference in Jakarta, Thursday, April 29, 2021.

Even so, a handful of people rebelled in clandestine. This separatist movement is known as terrorism.

He emphasized that the government will improve the quality of the environment till the welfare of the people of Papua and West Papua. Mahfud said the settlement of the problem in Papua would not use the conflict approach in terms of the issue of independence, but of the battle against terror.

 “Regarding the act of eradicating terrorism is not against the Papuan people, but against a handful of persons (undertaking terror),” said the former Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court (MK).

Mahfud asserted that the actions of the Armed Criminal Group (KKB) at Papua recently can be called acts of terror. The group’s action complies the definition of a terrorist based on Law Number 5 of 2018 concerning with the Eradication of Criminal Acts of Terrorism.

“What the KKB and all names of the affiliated organizations and persons are doing is a terrorist act,” said Mahfud.

Mahfud stated that the definition of terrorist is anyone who plans, mobilizes and organizes terrorism. Meanwhile, terrorism is any act that uses violence or threats of violence arising an atmosphere of terror or spreading fear that can cause victims or damage.

  The government has instructed the Police, TNI, the State Intelligence Agency (BIN) and related officials for acting quickly and decisively. However, all firm actions must remain to be measurable and in accordance with legal corridors.

  “In a sense, don’t become civil society as the target,” said Mahfud.
